Types of Filters

Salt chlorine generators

P

ool filters are the hardest worked piece of equipment on your pool. Pool filters work round-the-clock to filter impurities so you can enjoy pure water. You'll want a durable pool filter that will remove even the smallest debris and sediments from your water. If you are wondering which one will be right for you, read more:

There are 3 types:
1) Sand Filter.
A sand filter filters down to approximately 10 microns.  The average sand filter has approximately 3 sq. ft.  of filter area.

Pros.  Easy to use and replacing the sand is inexpensive.
Cons.  Very little sq. ft. of filter area, and filters  the least amount of dirt.  Must also be backwashed weekly which results in using more water and chemicals.

2) Cartridge Filter.
A cartridge filter looks similar to a car’s oil filter in design.  It can filter down to 5 microns and has anywhere between 25 to 100 sq. ft. filter area.
Pros.  Simple to use, no moving parts, filters finer than a sand filter.  No  backwashing required, resulting in no water loss from pool or wasted chemicals.
Cons.  Replacement cartridges can be costly to replace, difficult and time consuming to clean.

3) Diatomaceous Earth "DE". This can be filtered down to 1 micron and have a sq ft anywhere between 24 to 72 sq. ft.
Pros.  Best filter capability. Cleans a dirty pool the fastest with the least amount of effort, much less backwashing in the summer season resulting in less water and chemical loss.
Cons. If not properly maintained, the filter grids can be costly to replace.

Pool Service Tips

  • Be sure to keep your pool water properly balanced at all times.  Having the proper pH total alkalinity and calcium hardness level will help your sanitizer work to its optimum.

  • Brush your pool walls and floor once a week to help keep the surface smooth and free of algae.

  • Always remember to check your skimmer and pump baskets on a regular basis.  By keeping your baskets clean, you will be assured in having better filtration.

  • Did you know some of the most common places for a pool to leak are in the mouth of a skimmer where the concrete meets the plastic skimmer box?  This can be easily be fixed by the homeowner using pool putty available at our Retail Store.

  • Always add diatomaceous earth (“DE”) to your DE filter after backwashing.  Operating a DE filter without DE powder will clog the filter grids and cause your pressure to rise too quickly.

  • A manual cleaning by opening the tank and hosing your grids mid-season is highly recommended.

  • Sand filters should be backwashed once a week or after a good vacuuming.

  • To get the best results from your sand filter, sand should be changed at least every 3 to 5 years.

D

id you know that you no longer have to rely on pool chemicals to sanitize your swimming pool?

Saline pools employs common table salt as a natural, gentle cleanser.

Read on, or better yet, call Colony Pool Service to learn more about its benefits and maintenance.

A pool would have common table salt poured—several hundred pounds for an average 22,000 to 25,000 gallon pool into the water.

A salt chlorine generator installed within the pool’s mechanical system then separates the salt molecules (by means of electrolysis) into sodium and chlorine.

The chlorine dissolves instantaneously in the water to form hypochlorous acid, a gentle cleaning agent.

After the hypochlorous acid destroys the microorganisms, the sodium and chlorine revert back to salt, and the process starts all over again.

Benefits

Unlike seawater, which has a salt content of about 35,000 parts per million (ppm), saline pools contain between 2,400 and 6,000 ppm—less than a third to a little more than half the saltiness of human tears.

The water is very mild, and at levels below 3,500 ppm nearly impossible for human taste buds to detect.  Many compare the experience of swimming in a saline pool to that of taking a shower in soft water: smooth and refreshing, and not drying to the skin or damaging to hair or clothes.  Saline is easy on the environment.

Installation

Colony Pool Service can install a salt chlorine generator, even if you’re just retrofitting an existing pool.  We have experience with saline systems.

Saltwater pools can be any size or shape you want—just make sure to seal porous stone (such as limestone and sandstone) in and around the pool to avoid corrosion.  In high concentrations, salt might have an adverse effect on certain types of metal, such as chrome, which is often used for pool ladders, handrails, and underwater light fixture.  Metal corrosion has not occurred in any of its saline installations because the level of salt is usually too low to be harmful.  Make sure to select a generator suited to your needs.  Factors that must be considered include the size of your pool, how many people usually enjoy it at once, and how many hours a day it is used.

Maintenance

After the initial dose of salt, you will occasionally need to add more to accommodate for splashes, backwashing, and overflow.  You also must check pH levels regularly, especially when the pool is used by many people or after heavy rains, as these circumstances may change the salinity of the water.  Maintaining the salt chlorine generator is fairly simple.  You will need to soak its generating cell in muriatic or hydrochloric acid once a year to eliminate calcium deposits; be sure to follow manufacturers’ guidelines.  Cleaning the cell isn’t time-consuming—it generally takes less than an hour—but is necessary to preserve the effectives of the unit.  With proper upkeep, your saline pool will reward you with years of enjoyment.
